Biography
John Boydell (1719-1804) was an English engraver, publisher and art patron, born in Dorrington, Shropshire. He was known for his landscape engravings, particularly of the work of Dutch painter, Aelbert Cuyp. He was a successful businessman, and helped establish the Royal Academy of Arts in London, where he was elected as a founding member. Boydell was also known for his promotion of British art, including through his famous "Shakespeare Gallery", a collection of paintings inspired by the works of William Shakespeare.
