Biography
Johan Barthold Jongkind (1819-1891) was a Dutch painter known for his atmospheric landscapes, particularly his depictions of the Seine River in Paris. Influenced by the Barbizon school and the emerging Impressionist movement, Jongkind's work captures the fleeting effects of light and weather. His loose brushstrokes, vibrant colors, and emphasis on capturing the essence of a scene prefigure Impressionism. His paintings often depict the bustling urban life of Paris, with its bridges, boats, and everyday activities. While Jongkind's talent was recognized by his contemporaries, his work was overshadowed by the rise of Impressionism, and he died in relative obscurity.
