Biography

Jan van Hemessen was a Flemish painter who was active during the 16th century. Born in Hemiksem, Belgium around 1500, he later moved to Haarlem, Netherlands where he died around 1566. Van Hemessen's work, characterized by its attention to detail and use of realistic figures, is known for its portrayal of religious and historical subjects. He is noted for his depiction of contemporary daily life, including portraits of prominent figures and scenes from everyday life. His works often depict the memento mori theme, a reflection on mortality, like the "Allegory of the Vanity of the World."
