Biography
Jan van der Heyden (1637-1712) was a Dutch painter and draughtsman known for his detailed cityscapes. A master of perspective, his works often depict the architecture and urban life of his native Amsterdam, including street scenes, canal views, and public buildings. He also pioneered the use of perspective in depicting fire engines and other technological advancements of his time. Van der Heyden's paintings are characterized by their sharp realism, cool colours, and meticulous detail, which makes them a valuable source for understanding the cityscape of 17th-century Holland.
