Biography
Jacques Philippe Levilly was a French engraver active in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. His engravings often depicted allegorical figures, particularly those representing the arts. Levilly's style is characterized by delicate lines, soft shading, and a focus on detail. These three prints, "La Musique", "La Sculpture", and "La Peinture", represent music, sculpture and painting personified by a young woman engaging in the practice of each respective art. The prints would have been popular for their beauty and as representations of the Enlightenment period's interest in the arts and the human spirit.
