Biography
Jacobus Johannes Lauwers, born in Brugge in 1753 and died in Amsterdam in 1800, was a Dutch artist known for his drawings and paintings. His work often depicted classical themes, such as the human form, as well as scenes of everyday life. He was a skilled draftsman, as demonstrated in his detailed figure studies, which were often executed in black chalk on paper. These works show a strong understanding of anatomy and perspective, highlighting Lauwers' mastery of the academic style. He also produced genre scenes, such as "The Well", that portray rural life with realistic detail and a sense of warmth.
