Biography
Ishikawa Gengaku (1747-1806) was a Japanese painter known for his landscapes. He was a master of the literati style, characterized by its emphasis on spontaneity and individual expression. Gengaku's landscapes often depict majestic mountains, flowing rivers, and solitary figures in a minimalist and evocative manner. He skillfully employed ink washes and brushstrokes to create a sense of depth and atmospheric perspective in his works. His paintings reflect a strong connection to nature and a deep understanding of traditional Chinese landscape painting, incorporating elements like the "xieyi" (suggestive brushwork) and the "shan shui" (mountain-water) aesthetic.
