Biography
Hippolyte Bayard (1801-1887) was a French pioneer in photography, known for his early use of the direct positive process, a technique which created a unique, almost ghostly effect. He is often overlooked as a key figure in the history of photography, even though he was a contemporary of Louis Daguerre. Bayard captured detailed scenes of everyday life in Paris, including architectural views and street scenes. His work often features a subtle sense of melancholy and a keen eye for detail, characteristics that would later define the emerging genre of street photography.
