Biography
Henri-Joseph Harpignies (1819-1916) was a French painter and printmaker known for his landscapes. He was a key figure in the Barbizon School, a group of artists who embraced realism in their depictions of rural France. Harpignies' works are characterized by their delicate use of line, soft light, and harmonious compositions. He frequently depicted trees, rivers, and rolling hills, often with a focus on the interplay of light and shadow. His etchings, like the ones shown here, were particularly admired for their subtle detail and masterful use of black and white.
