Biography
Gustave Le Gray, a prominent French photographer working between 1820 and 1884, is best known for his landscape and seascape images. His work is characterized by a strong sense of composition and detail, often employing the "wichtel" technique where negatives are joined together to create panoramic views, as in his renowned "The Sea" series. His work, which is both technically and artistically masterful, greatly influenced the development of landscape photography, and brought a new understanding of light and shadow in the medium.
