Biography
Gotō Mitsuyoshi (Shinjō), active between 1780 and 1843, was a Japanese artist specializing in the creation of *koshirae*, the decorative fittings for swords. His work, typically executed in the *shippō* cloisonné technique, often featured dynamic animal imagery, as seen in his *kozuka*, or sword-hilt ornaments. These intricate designs showcase the artist's skill in using gold and other precious metals to create vibrant and detailed scenes that were highly valued by samurai warriors. The use of *shippō* enamel, with its vibrant colors and intricate detail, helped to elevate the *koshirae* from functional objects to works of art.
