Biography
The German photographic duo known as the Gebrüder Becher, whose work was exhibited in the 1970s, were known for their highly influential style of photography. The artists, Bernd and Hilla Becher, explored industrial and architectural subjects in black and white using a consistent, documentary style. Becher's work is often cited as a precursor to the New Topographics movement, and it has had a significant impact on contemporary photography. They are widely known for their series of typological photographs of industrial structures such as water towers and cooling towers, which were shot in a detached and objective manner. The pair's iconic grid arrangements and their use of black and white photography served to emphasize the functionality and form of the industrial structures.
