Biography
Francisco de Goya, a Spanish painter and printmaker, was born in Fuendetodos, Spain, in 1746, and died in Bordeaux, France, in 1828. His work is characterized by its dramatic use of light and shadow, and often reflects the political and social turmoil of his time. Goya is known for his portraits of Spanish royalty and aristocracy, such as the "The Duchess of Alba," as well as his satirical depictions of the follies of society, such as in his famous "The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters." His later works, such as his series of etchings known as "The Disasters of War," are characterized by their dark and disturbing imagery, which reflected the horrors of the Napoleonic Wars.
