Biography
Francesco Piranesi (1758-1810) was an Italian artist known for his etchings of ancient Roman ruins. He was a member of the Piranesi family, famous for their depictions of ancient architecture, and followed in the footsteps of his father Giovanni Battista Piranesi, a celebrated architect and artist. His works are characterized by dramatic use of light and shadow and detailed representations of Roman architecture, particularly in the city of Pompeii, a Roman city that was buried by a volcanic eruption in 79 AD. The images above depict the interior of a Pompeii home and display the artist's signature style of architectural realism.
