Biography
Dosso Dossi, born in Mantua, Italy around 1490 and died in Ferrara in 1542, was an Italian painter of the High Renaissance and Mannerist periods. He was known for his vibrant colours, expressive brushwork and the use of fantastical elements in his religious works, a feature that would set him apart from the more traditional approaches of his contemporaries. His work is characterized by a strong sense of realism and detail, often depicting figures in intricate and dramatic poses. He was particularly renowned for his religious paintings, such as the "Holy Family" series and "The Flight into Egypt" which depict scenes from the life of Jesus Christ with a blend of devotional piety and artistic innovation.
