Biography
Desiderio da Settignano was an Italian sculptor who was active in Florence during the Early Renaissance. He was known for his exquisite marble reliefs, often depicting the Madonna and Child. His works are characterized by their delicate, almost ethereal, beauty and highly detailed rendering of drapery and anatomy. The artist's skill in capturing subtle expressions and naturalism in his sculptures set a high standard for subsequent generations of Renaissance artists. His most notable works include the "Madonna and Child" relief at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Da Settignano's short career was cut short by his untimely death at the young age of 34 in 1464.
