Biography
C. Ottenhofer was a German engraver who created this print of Maria Elisabeth, Duchess of Brunswick-Lüneburg, in 1694. The image is a fine example of a portrait engraving, using an intricate, baroque frame to showcase the royal subject. Ottenhofer’s use of hatching and cross-hatching techniques, which use lines to create tonal gradations, give the artwork a sense of texture and realism. Ottenhofer was active in the late 17th century, specializing in portraits, religious subjects, and allegorical scenes. His work is characterized by its meticulous detail and the use of ornamental flourishes.
