Biography
Chas. Richards Dodge was a photographer who produced the image “After the Opera”. This piece depicts a still life arrangement featuring a vase of flowers, a book, a small sculpture, and some fabric laid out on a table. The image was likely made with a wet-collodion process. The artist used a strong light source to create deep shadows and sharp contrasts, a common technique in 19th century photography. This example of Dodge’s work shows the artist’s skill in carefully composing a still life arrangement to maximize the use of light and shadow.
