Biography
Bernardino Luini (c.1480-June 1532) was an Italian painter active in Lombardy, particularly in Milan. Luini's work, influenced by Leonardo da Vinci, is known for its delicate and graceful figures, soft modeling, and subtle use of color. He is best known for his religious paintings, particularly his depictions of the Virgin Mary and Child, such as the "Madonna and Child with Saints Catherine and Barbara" (c. 1525-1530). His work often features a devotional quality, creating a sense of intimacy and serenity. Luini's paintings are characterized by their soft, sfumato-like forms, often using muted tones and gentle transitions between light and dark. He frequently painted religious themes but also produced portraits and mythological scenes.
