Anne Claude Philippe Caylus

Anne Claude Philippe de Caylus (1692-1765) was a French aristocrat and connoisseur of the arts who was also a prolific printmaker and etcher. Caylus was renowned for his detailed and realistic etchings of daily life in 18th century Paris. His most famous works are "Recueil d'estampes d'après les tableaux et les dessins de l'Académie royale de Peinture et de Sculpture" (Collection of Prints after the Paintings and Drawings of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture) and "Nouvelles suites d’estampes gravées d’après les tableaux et les dessins des plus grands maîtres" (New Series of Prints Engraved after the Paintings and Drawings of the Greatest Masters). Caylus's etchings are often characterized by their meticulous detail, dramatic chiaroscuro, and sense of immediacy. They provide a fascinating glimpse into the everyday lives of Parisians during the Enlightenment.
