Biography
Allart van Everdingen (1621-1675) was a Dutch Golden Age painter and printmaker known for his dramatic landscapes. Born in Alkmaar and active in Amsterdam, van Everdingen's work is characterized by its use of dark and stormy skies, rugged cliffs, and turbulent waters. He is best known for his depictions of Norwegian landscapes, which he visited during a trip to Scandinavia in the 1640s. His etchings, like the one depicting a river scene with a water mill, are often characterized by their detailed and expressive lines. The visual impact of his art, with its heightened sense of realism and dramatic effects, influenced the development of Dutch landscape painting.
