Biography
Alessandro Magnasco (1667-1749) was an Italian painter known for his dynamic compositions and expressive brushwork, particularly in his depiction of crowded scenes. The artist specialized in "capriccio" - a genre of painting characterized by imaginary landscapes with fantastical elements. His works often depict crowded scenes filled with figures engaging in a variety of activities, such as street scenes, religious processions, and gatherings of people in outdoor settings. He also produced a number of paintings on religious themes, such as the "Miracle of the Holy Thorn" (ca. 1720), where the artist captures the frenzy of the crowd and their fervent faith. Magnasco's art is characterized by its dark palette, dramatic chiaroscuro, and expressive brushstrokes, which give his paintings a sense of energy and movement.
