Orientalism

Orientalism: Between Fact and Fantasy examines how 19th-century European artists and designers engaged with the cultures and visual traditions of the Middle East during an era of colonialism, imperialism and global exchange. Featuring around 180 works, including paintings, textiles, ceramics, photographs, armour and decorative arts, the exhibition explores the influence of Islamic art on Western creativity while questioning the fantasies and stereotypes that shaped Orientalist imagery. Drawing largely from The Met’s collection, it offers a nuanced look at cultural exchange, artistic inspiration and the politics of representation.
