This relief sculpture, Presentation of the Child Jesus to Mary and Joseph, was carved from limewood, probably in Austria. Look closely, and you can see the artist, Johann Georg Schwanthaler, has taken a subtractive approach: removing material to reveal the scene from within. Limewood is ideal for this kind of work; it’s relatively soft, with a fine, even grain that allows for precise detail. The figures emerge with great clarity, their drapery cascading in elegant folds. The frame, too, is part of the sculpture, and the labor doesn't stop there. Consider the careful finishing of the surface. The pale, matte surface may have once been gilded or painted, demonstrating the value placed on this object, and the skills of its maker. By understanding the amount of work and the process, we can consider it beyond a simple religious image, but as an expression of artistic and cultural values.
