Curatorial notes
This anonymous map of the Brugse Vrije, now at the Rijksmuseum, meticulously details the region through a dense network of lines and symbols. Note how the ships at sea, seemingly small, evoke a much larger world of trade and exploration. The ship as a symbol has ancient roots, appearing in various cultures to represent journeys, the soul's passage, and the crossing of boundaries. We can trace it through time, from ancient Egyptian funerary boats to Viking longships, each bearing the hopes and fears of its era. The ship is a carrier of cultural memory. It stirs the collective subconscious with images of departure and arrival, a symbol of our human yearning for what lies beyond. Like the tides, such symbols ebb and flow, resurfacing through history with altered yet resonant meanings.
