Leonora Carrington painted 'Spider', and it feels like it came directly from a dream, or maybe a nightmare. The spider’s legs, oh, they’re so spindly and delicate, almost like charcoal lines scratched onto the surface. There’s this intense red behind the spider, it's a wash of color, not quite solid, which really brings out the spider's form. And, oh, that body! It's a whole world in itself, with faces and symbols all tangled up together. Carrington’s not trying to hide anything, the process is right there on the surface. She's inviting you in to look closer, to puzzle it out with her. Carrington, like Remedios Varo, was all about these kinds of surreal, symbolic universes. It’s not about having one right answer, but more about letting your mind wander, connecting with something deeper. That’s what keeps me coming back, anyway.
