This vibrant chromolithograph was made as one of a series of collectible cards for Allen & Ginter Cigarettes. These small cards, which were hugely popular at the time, offer an insight into the intersection of commerce and cultural values of the late 19th century. This card depicts a fair-skinned child surrounded by raspberries; mid-bite, she scratches her arm where three small insects are biting her. The image may evoke notions of innocence and nature, but also subtly reveals the realities of hygiene and health of the time, particularly for children. The detail of the insects reminds us that these cards weren't just advertisements, they were also reflections of everyday life, complete with its minor irritations. The raspberries, symbols of both luxury and nature’s bounty, contrast with the child's discomfort, creating a complex tableau that is both charming and thought-provoking. These cards blur the lines between art, advertisement, and social commentary.
