Zdzislaw Beksinski’s unsettling, untitled painting presents a figure rendered in shades of pink and red, seemingly formed from textured layers of oil paint. Beksinski embraced a labor-intensive process. The visible brushstrokes and the blurring of forms through the manipulation of the oil paint suggest a slow, deliberate approach, building up the image gradually. This engagement with the materiality of paint, with its capacity for layering and blending, is crucial to the work's haunting effect. The figure emerges from a haze of color, its edges dissolving into the surrounding space. The work’s emotional weight is influenced by the way it has been made. Beksinski’s commitment to traditional painting techniques, even in the face of modern art movements, allowed him to create a deeply personal and evocative image. By emphasizing the slow, physical labor of painting, he resists the depersonalization of the art world. Looking closely at the artwork, we begin to question the established hierarchies that separate the supposedly 'skilled' labor of the artist from other forms of work.
