Antoon Derkinderen drew this design for a stained-glass window with pencil, likely in 1924. You know, looking at this sketch, I can almost feel the artist working. Can't you? I can see him, pencil in hand, carefully mapping out these scenes and lettering. I'm so drawn to the texture of the pencil on paper. The precision of the architectural borders, the geometric shapes, and the diamond in the middle are all so controlled. But then, the human figures are so much more free-flowing and curvaceous. I'm thinking of artists like Fernand Leger, or even some of the Bauhaus designers like Oskar Schlemmer. There's a similar interest in form and function here. It's like Derkinderen is in conversation with the work of these artists, maybe even trying to find his own place within that dialogue. When we look at art we are entering into the same exchange of ideas.
