Robert Adams's photograph captures a slice of suburban life, 'Tract Home, Security, Colorado' using black and white film. I imagine Adams with his camera, searching for the perfect angle to frame this scene. The composition is so still and balanced, but there's a quiet tension. The house, with its slightly absurd garage door trim, feels both familiar and strange. I bet Adams was drawn to the way the light hits the stucco, creating subtle shadows that reveal the texture of the building. The ordinary objects – the grill, the lawnmower – are charged with a sense of melancholy, maybe even a little humor. I’m thinking of other artists who've captured similar scenes, like Ed Ruscha with his deadpan documentation of LA architecture. There's this shared interest in the everyday, finding beauty (or something like it) in the mundane.
