This print, made by Stefano della Bella around the mid-17th century, is made with the intaglio process of etching. This is a printmaking technique in which lines are incised into a metal plate, which holds the ink to form the image. Notice the relatively light touch of the etching overall, which gives the figures a sense of depth and volume despite the absence of strong shading. The process also allows for the inclusion of fine details like the figures’ armors and facial expressions, as well as the elaborately lettered inscriptions. Etchings like this were often produced in multiples, making them more accessible than unique works of art. The print medium thus lends itself to conveying information and ideas to a wider audience. The artist’s choice of process and subject matter is deeply intertwined with social and cultural values. By focusing on materials, making and context, we can move beyond traditional distinctions between fine art and craft.
