This is an engraving of Corporal Sigvard Lycke by an anonymous artist, now held at the SMK. The portrait is presented within an oval frame, a classic structure which gives a sense of formality. The artist’s use of line is particularly striking. Fine, closely spaced lines create the shading that defines Corporal Lycke’s features and uniform. Notice how the lines curve to follow the contours of his face, giving it volume and depth. The engraving captures the textures of his hair, coat, and the quill pen he holds. The lines create a sense of detail and realism, characteristic of portrait engravings of the time. Below the portrait, the inscription adds another layer to the work. Encased in a rectangular box supported by small round pillars, the text acts as a base for the portrait. Together, the elements of oval, rectangle and line function cohesively, framing the sitter, and creating a structured approach to portraiture.
