This is a sketch, Artiesten in kostuums, by Isaac Israels, and it’s all about the joy of process. Israels isn't precious; he's just letting the line do its thing. There’s something so immediate about sketches, you know? You can almost feel the artist's hand moving across the page. Look at the figures on the right, the way they overlap, like ghostly apparitions. It’s a world of suggestion. I love how a few quick lines can conjure up a whole figure. There's a real economy to it. This reminds me of some of Degas’ sketches. Both artists capture a sense of movement and fleeting moments. And like all great art, this sketch isn't about answers, it's about possibilities. It’s an invitation to dream, to fill in the blanks, and to see the world with fresh eyes.
