Robert Adams made this gelatin silver print of an interior, Lakewood, Colorado. What strikes me is the composition, built around a grid of horizontals and verticals, but softened by the circular forms of the lampshades. I imagine Adams, finding beauty in the mundane, the everyday objects that fill a home. He sees a certain symmetry in the arrangement—the TV mirroring the piano, the lamps echoing the shape of the beanbag chair. There’s a quietness to it, a stillness that invites contemplation. The black and white emphasizes the contrast and tonal range, the way light falls across the surfaces, highlighting textures. I think about Walker Evans, or even Bernd and Hilla Becher, artists equally drawn to the vernacular landscape. This piece is of its time, yet speaks to something enduring about how we inhabit space and create homes.
