Albert Serwazi made this study of a resting model with ink on paper. It's got that quality of a quick sketch, and it feels like the artist was trying to capture a fleeting moment. I can imagine Serwazi sitting there, charcoal in hand, quickly mapping out the scene, trying to get it down before the model wakes up, or moves. The bold, confident lines describe the scene economically, suggesting a narrative of rest and quiet contemplation. It's interesting to me how line alone can convey so much information. There's something so immediate about drawing – it's like thinking with your hand, and it’s a bit like automatic writing. Serwazi's study reminds us that art is a continuous dialogue, a conversation across time and space, where artists like him inspire and challenge us to see the world in new ways.
