This bowl, made by the Cibola people, shows us how a humble material can speak volumes. The clay itself is elemental, dug from the earth, and testifies to a direct, intimate relationship with the landscape. The form, built by hand, perhaps using a coil method, speaks to a tradition passed down through generations. But it is the painted decoration that really catches the eye. Geometric patterns in red, black, and white create a dynamic visual rhythm. The star motif on the inside and the interlocking scroll on the outside showcase both precision and artistry. It’s tempting to see this simply as decoration. Yet, understanding the labour involved, and the cultural significance of these symbols, elevates this bowl beyond mere craft. It becomes a tangible expression of Cibola identity, and a testament to the enduring power of human creativity.
