Hans Holbein the Elder created this panel painting, “The Kiss of Judas,” as part of his Grey Passion series. Holbein was working during a period of religious and social upheaval, and his art often reflected the changing attitudes towards faith and authority. In this moment of betrayal, we see Judas planting a kiss on Jesus’ cheek, while soldiers surge forward to arrest him. The use of a muted palette evokes a sense of solemnity, focusing attention on the emotional weight of the scene. Holbein emphasizes the humanity of Christ, depicting him surrounded by a chaotic mob. The kiss, traditionally a sign of affection, becomes a symbol of deceit and violence. Holbein was deeply interested in the psychology of his figures. Here he invites us to reflect on the complex interplay of faith, betrayal, and human nature. The artist challenges us to confront the uncomfortable aspects of the Passion story and consider its relevance to our own lives.
