Philip Zilcken created this etching, "Groep figuren in de branding, twee zeilboten op zee," which translates to "Group of figures in the surf, two sailing boats at sea," at an unknown date. Zilcken came from a wealthy background that placed importance on social engagement and philanthropy. Here, we see a man on horseback in the foreground, looking out towards two ships on the horizon. He is surrounded by figures standing at the shoreline. The social hierarchy is subtly expressed: the man on horseback stands apart, literally elevated above the rest. The figures on the beach appear to be of a lower class, gazing out towards the sea with a sense of longing or perhaps resignation. The monochromatic palette adds to the somber mood, emphasizing the harsh realities of life for those dependent on the sea for their livelihoods. Zilcken’s etching captures a moment of contemplation and connection with the sea, tinged with the quiet acknowledgment of social disparities.
