Untitled 58 by Carl Chiarenza

Curatorial notes

Editor: This is Carl Chiarenza’s “Untitled 58,” currently residing at the Harvard Art Museums. It’s a gelatin silver print, and it feels quite dark and abstract to me. What do you make of it? Curator: Note how the interplay of light and shadow transforms mundane objects into potent symbols. Do you see how the ribbon-like form might evoke ideas of cycles, continuity, or even restriction? Editor: I see it now! The darkness around the ribbon makes it almost feel trapped. Curator: Precisely. Chiarenza often used collage to explore psychological states. These swirling shapes and shadowy depths might represent internal struggles or hidden aspects of the self. Editor: So, it's not just about the objects themselves, but what they represent on a deeper level. I'll definitely look at abstract art differently now.
