Curatorial notes

This ceramic plate with a stylized floral pattern was made by N.V. Plateelbakkerij Zuid-Holland. The pattern's bold color blocking, thick golden outlines, and graphic quality really jump out at you. It's like the artist wasn't just decorating but actively in conversation with the form. The surface has got this cool, smooth, almost glassy texture. It's hard to say for sure how they did it, but the way the gold and black sort of sit on top makes it seem like it was carefully layered on. Take a peek at the top right, at those swirling golden spirals, they're positively hypnotic. This plate feels like it's in dialogue with Art Nouveau, but also maybe a bit of Japanese design too. There's a similar embrace of pattern and an interest in organic shapes. It’s a reminder that art is this ongoing conversation, each piece building on what came before, but always in its own unique voice.
