This is a photograph of the Interieur van de Hervormde Kerk van Noordwijk-Binnen, its maker remains anonymous. It's almost like looking at a drawing, the way the light and shadow play in these pale browns. Look at the textures, the way the light seems to just eat into the walls and the roof beams. The composition is built on verticals, but they are countered by the gentle arc of the ceiling. The ladder on the left adds a human scale to the photograph. It gives you the sense of the artist placing it, and composing the shot. The photograph is not just an image, it’s an invitation to consider how an artist uses light and shadow to create form. It reminds me of some of the more pared down architectural studies by Bernd and Hilla Becher, except rendered in soft sepia tones. It captures a unique moment and place. It feels like a conversation, open and ongoing.
