Mathäus Küsel created this set design from ‘Il Pomo D’Oro’ using etching. It is a printmaking technique that uses acid to cut into a metal plate, allowing for detailed and elaborate imagery, as seen here. The visual impact relies on the contrast between the stark white paper and the fine, dark lines of the etching. Look at how the lines create depth and texture, from the feathery wings of Jupiter’s eagle to the solid architecture along the boulevard. The original set design, of course, would have involved many more materials – wood, textiles, paint, and the labor of numerous artisans to realize. The scene, with gods in the sky and an elegant figure on earth, suggests power and spectacle. Set designs like this were crucial to the opera's success, providing a visual feast that enhanced the drama. In its time, the opera house was a place for the wealthy to see and be seen, reinforcing social status through displays of artistic patronage. Considering this print, and the production it served, reminds us that artistic creations are often the result of extensive collaboration and economic investment.
