Józef Pankiewicz must have painted these white peonies with oils on canvas sometime in the early 20th century. It's a classic subject, flowers, but look how he renders them! I can imagine him, squinting, brush in hand, trying to capture the light as it hits the petals. The paint isn't too thick, but you can still see the texture, the way he loaded up the brush and then let it dance across the surface. There’s a real push and pull here – some roses are pink, some white. Notice how he’s built up the color in layers. The blues and yellows of the vase really make the white of the flowers glow! It’s like he's not just painting what he sees, but also what he feels, you know? He’s part of a long conversation of artists looking, responding, and painting - and it’s like he’s saying, “I see you, and I’m adding my voice to the chorus.” Painting is a kind of dance, and Pankiewicz clearly knew how to lead.
