This is an advert by Annie Ermeling for the exhibition 'De Vrouw 1813-1913' in Amsterdam. It's a design that embraces process. It feels like a very hands-on piece, like the artist was really in the moment, making decisions on the fly. The limited palette, makes me think of the kinds of decisions we make when faced with limitations. The texture is smooth but the line work is very precise. Look at the radiant lines that frame the central figure. It's like she's glowing. The lines create a sense of depth and movement. And I’m really drawn to the figure’s dress, and the way the artist uses a simple line and butterfly motif to create a sense of volume and texture. It's almost hypnotic. Ermeling’s design reminds me of Hilma af Klint's work in its combination of organic forms and geometric structures. And that reminds us, art is a conversation across time. There is always ambiguity. We never really know what something means, but we have fun trying to find out.
