This sketch of a stone gate, or 'Stenen poort', was composed with pencil on paper by Bramine Hubrecht. The stone gate, as seen in the picture, is an architectural symbol representing transition and passage. Notice how the gate, shrouded in vegetation, evokes a sense of nature reclaiming man-made structures. Across time, we find similar motifs, from ancient Roman arches adorned with foliage to Renaissance depictions of crumbling ruins. Think of the triumphal arches of Rome, symbols of imperial power. These stone gates marked not just physical boundaries but also thresholds of status and honor. As civilizations rise and fall, the stones endure, yet their meaning evolves. Here, the motif of the stone gate, a testament to both human ambition and the relentless march of time, lingers in our collective memory, resurfacing and adapting in a cyclical dance through history.
