These Torah finials, or ‘Rimmonim’, reside at the Minneapolis Institute of Art and were made by an anonymous artist. The finials are an expression of a deep love for process and material! They’re made of silver, and the artist has created a dazzling array of textures, from the smooth columns to the lacy filigree work higher up. Look at the tiny bells hanging from delicate chains. Each one is perfectly formed, a testament to the maker’s skill and patience. The light catches on the silver, creating a shimmering effect that feels almost alive. It reminds me of Eva Hesse’s sculptures. She too was interested in the dialogue between form and material. Ultimately, these ‘Rimmonim’ are a reminder that art is not just about the finished product, but the process of creation itself.
