Editor: This is Jacques Callot’s "Immaculate Conception." It’s a rather small etching. The figure seems to float ethereally, doesn’t she? What do you make of Callot’s compositional choices here? Curator: Observe the meticulously rendered lines. Notice the intricate hatching used to define form and create tonal variations, especially in the drapery.
