Naked Man 

Banksy made this street art, entitled Naked Man, using stencils and spray paint. It encapsulates many of the cultural preoccupations of his work. Created in the UK, it's hard to put a firm date on it, but we can be sure it comments on the social structures of its own time, in a self-consciously progressive way. We can ask ourselves: does it critique the institutions of art? Well, this piece of street art certainly challenged the norms of the art world by appearing on a public wall, rather than in a gallery or museum. To properly understand Banksy, it's useful to look at the history of graffiti as political statement, and the subversive potential of street art. Only then can we can begin to unravel the meaning of art as something that is contingent on social and institutional context.
