Piero di Cosimo painted "A Hunting Scene" with oil on wood panel around 1500, during the Italian Renaissance. The painting pulses with energy, illustrating a mythic interpretation of humanity's relationship to the natural world. Cosimo was known for his eccentric personality, so it might come as no surprise that this hunting scene deviates from traditional Renaissance depictions. Instead of depicting a triumphant return from the hunt, Cosimo shows a chaotic clash between man and beast. What might be read as a celebration of man's dominance over nature is also a raw portrayal of survival, and a rather queer one at that. Throughout, male figures are entwined in embrace, with possible allusions to classical narratives, like the story of Hermaphroditus and Salmacis. Cosimo’s emotional landscape feels both ancient and strikingly contemporary.
