Nicolas Toussaint Charlet created this print, "Soldier on his sickbed calling a sister," sometime in the early 19th century. The composition, rendered in lithography, delicately balances light and shadow to draw us into the soldier's intimate plea. The soldier, pallid and reclined, forms a stark contrast with the crisp, dark lines detailing the nun's habit and the military uniforms. This contrast uses the semiotic language of light to emphasize the tension between suffering and duty, and the somber mood is enhanced by the controlled tonal gradations. The artist’s precise, almost clinical lines capture the vulnerability of the soldier, destabilizing traditional heroic depictions of military figures. Charlet masterfully uses the print medium to explore themes of mortality and compassion. The work challenges viewers to consider the human cost of conflict, beyond the battlefield.
